- Introduction -
The iPlayer is a flash cart dedicated to media playback and homebrew,
the “legal” aspects of a flash cart. It isn’t the first cart to try
this approach, but it is probably the most successful. Looking back, we
see the failures of the bulky Max Media Dock, the commercialized Games
and Music cartridge and the short lived Media Cart. All three tried to
do the same thing the iPlayer is now attempting and have all met with
some degree of failure.

The box says "Turn your DS into PMP"
The problem with those three carts is that they took away from
the
flash cart experience and added nothing new. They claim to be carts
that focused on media and homebrew, but essentially the carts only took
away the support for roms. They still ran .dpg or modified .dpg files
and they didn’t add anything new. This is where the iPlayer is
different. It is true that the iPlayer removed rom playback, but it
added something that many of us have thought was impossible to do on
the DS; support for mainstream codecs.

Show those PSP multimedia fans who's boss!
Practically every cart on the market now touts the ability to
play
videos, very few go into specifics on the box because it is far from
ideal. They play several formats, .dsm and .dpg, these two formats were
specifically designed for the DS, which means you are unlikely to find
them circulating on the internet. They are big, the quality isn’t
great, and if you want to watch videos, you pretty much had to convert
each video yourself.
Those familiar with programs such as BatchDPG or SUPER would
say
that conversion is a cinch, but for the average user, you may be
spending a few hours reading tutorials, downloading the right files and
setting everything up. It may take several conversions before you
figure out your own optimum settings, basically the balance between
quality, size and the time it takes to convert.
The iPlayer is different. It has chips on the cart to do the
necessary processing to run mainstream codecs. They claim to support
.avi, .rmvb, .mov, DIVX, MPEG, .flv, .3gp, ASF and .wmv. What does this
mean? No more conversion, just drag and drop your videos onto the
iPlayer and it should work! To be honest, I’m not a video guru, so keep
this in mind as you read the review.
- Design -
The iPlayer comes in a very nice box. I want to thank my
sponsor
4CoolDay for shipping it in superb packaging, it came in immaculate
condition. I would say the box would probably be crushed if it was
shipped normally. The box isn’t very sturdy or thick, but at least the
design is simple and appealing.
